Minnesota Enacts New Cell Phone Driving Restrictions

On April 12, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz signed into law a bipartisan “hands-free” bill that bans the use of hand-held cell phones while driving. The bill, H.F. 50, aims to prevent distracted driving accidents by prohibiting drivers from holding their phones while driving. Drivers can use voice-activated commands in a hands-free mode for calls and other functions. The law expands on Minnesota statutes that ban texting, using email and browsing social media while driving. Minnesota ENA's liaison to the Toward Zero Death Coalition, one of the organizations behind the bill, signed letters and sent emails in support of the legislation.
